Retrofit

RBC Plaza has long been recognized as one of Toronto’s most dangerous buildings for migrating birds. Located near the Lake Ontario shoreline, its reflective glass façade contributed to thousands of documented bird collisions over the years. Monitoring and advocacy by FLAP Canada, Never Collide, and Nature Canada since 1993 helped bring attention to the site and push this project forward.

The retrofit covered approximately 55,000 square feet of glass, treating 94% of the façade up to 16 metres using Feather Friendly’s Large-format Pro white markers. By focusing on the primary collision zone, the project turned one of the city’s most well-known problem sites into a major example of bird-safe retrofit at scale.

Why It Matters

RBC Plaza is one of the most recognizable buildings in Toronto. Its transformation shows how existing high-risk structures can be retrofitted effectively-and how long-term monitoring and advocacy can leas to meaningful change.
