Located in the heart of Toronto's financial district, the TD Centre has long been recognized as a significant bird collision hotspot due to its extensive glass façades and position along a major migratory route. Following years of monitoring, advocacy, and public engagement led by FLAP Canada, the six-tower complex underwent a large-scale bird-safe retrofit in 2021.
Feather Friendly visual markers were selected to help make nearly 100,000 sq ft of TD Centre's expansive glass surfaces visible to birds without compromising views or aesthetics.
The project marked a major milestone for bird conservation in the built environment, demonstrating how existing commercial towers can be retrofitted to significantly reduce collision risk while preserving their architectural character. At the time of installation, it was considered the largest bird-deterrent marker retrofit completed in North America.
The challenge at this site was to reduce bird collisions on large expanses of glass while preserving the architectural heritage of a landmark complex of six iconic downtown Toronto towers.
